LineageOS ROM releases first builds based on Android 10 (Update: More devices) - Android Police

Image
LineageOS is the most popular custom ROM in existence, and the project prides itself on bringing newer versions of Android to unsupported devices. However, Lineage has been a bit slow to roll out a version based on Android 10 — the Pie-based ROM was already available by this time last year. Thankfully, the next major version of LineageOS seems to be just around the corner. Even though unofficial Lineage ROMs based on Android 10 have been available for months, the project has yet to release a completed update for any officially-supported devices. That could change soon, as the project's build server has been updated to list all the phones that will receive nightly builds of LineageOS 17.1 (based on Android 10). The list currently contains the Fairphone 2, the original Moto Z, the much-loved HTC One M8, and a shit-ton of LG G3/V20 variants. The bolded models below are completely new to LineageOS, but the rest are already on LineageOS 16 Pie. Fairphone FP2 (FP2) Motorola Mot

WireGuard VPN protocol makes its way to Linux Kernel 5.6 - XDA Developers

Image
Virtual Private Networks, or VPNs, can be an essential tool in the digital age. Due to growing privacy concerns or simple geolocation barriers, more and more users are taking advantage of the increased privacy and versatility afforded by VPNs that they trust. With COVID-19 forcing millions of workers to stay at home, many are forced to use company-owned VPNs to work remotely. In the last few years, a new VPN implementation has taken root among tech enthusiasts, and it’s finally going to become accessible to millions of users in the near future. The name of that new implementation is WireGuard, developed by Jason Donenfeld, who goes by the username zx2c4 on our forums. Yesterday, he announced that WireGuard version 1.0 is a part of Linux Kernel 5.6 (via ArsTechnica ). In comparison to OpenVPN, IPSec, and other popular VPN implementations, WireGuard has a considerably smaller codebase, which reduces the attack surface. It is easy to configure and has faster connection negotiations than

Apple purchases hyperlocal weather app Dark Sky, ending API and killing Android apps - 9to5Mac

Image
In a big move to improve its weather app, Apple has purchased the highly popular iOS app Dark Sky. Along with the acquisition comes the end of Dark Sky for Android as well as an end to the API that’s used by popular apps like Carrot Weather, and more. Dark Sky announced the news in a blog post today. The news will certainly mean much improved native weather app for iOS but also brings with it some downsides like ending access to the API in 2022 and killing off the Android app. For the API, Dark Sky has stopped taking new signups and it will officially stop functioning for existing users come 2022. That’s going to impact many apps and services like the popular Carrot Weather, Google Chrome weather extensions, DuckDuck Go, Microsoft, Runkeeper, Yelp, and more. For now, Dark Sky for iOS will remain available for purchase, but Apple certainly will have plans to roll it into iOS natively at some point in the future. The native iOS Weather app hasn’t seen a major overhaul since iOS 7. Ba

The stable OxygenOS 10.3.2 update is now rolling out for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro, bringing with it the March 2020 security patch plus a number of performance tweaks. This latest update comes shortly after the OxygenOS Open Beta 11 update brought similar tweaks, the March 2020 patch, and performance enhancements a few days ago. Of course, you can expect the March 2020 security patch and more RAM optimizations alongside improvements for slow-mo video recording, fixes for disappearing screenshots within the OnePlus Gallery app, and issues that some saw whereby video would lag when played from within the app. Builds were spotted over on Reddit via the Oxygen Updater app, with the update package measuring in at around 270MB in size. Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are still getting security updates - SamMobile

Image
It was almost exactly four years ago that the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge went on sale in markets around the world. The S7 and S7 edge stopped getting major Android updates with Android 8.0 Oreo, in keeping with Samsung’s software update policy for Galaxy devices. However, the Korean giant continues to support the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge with security updates to this day, and it has released the March security patch for the two phones in quite a few countries in the last week or so. The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge continue to be in the quarterly schedule for security updates four years after launch, though there’s a good chance that will change starting next month. That’s because Samsung’s policy dictates that every flagship get monthly security updates for three years and once every three months in the fourth year. From the fifth year onward, security updates only arrive when a critical security vulnerability is discovered and needs fixing. The March 2020 security update is rolling o

How to enable dark mode on your Samsung Galaxy phone - Android Central

Image
There are several reasons why you might want to enable dark mode on your Samsung Galaxy smartphone. Perhaps you find it easier on your eyes, or perhaps you want to take advantage of Samsung's OLED screen technology and save some battery life by lighting up fewer pixels. Or maybe you just think it looks cool (it does). I'll show you how easy it is to set your screen to dark mode. Who knows, you may never want to go back! How to enable dark mode on your Galaxy phone For this guide, I am going to assume that your device is on Android 10 Q. There is a way to enable a version of dark mode for Galaxy phones on Android 9 Pie, but it is technically not an Android OS-level setting, and thus may not work across all of your apps. Make sure that your device is updated to Android 10 . Slide down the notification and settings shade. Depending on you, you've organized your system settings in the pulldown menu, you may need to swipe over a screen to see the Dark mode setting (it

LG V40 ThinQ Android 10 kernel source code published ahead of LG UX 9.0 rollout - XDA Developers

Image
The smartphone wing of LG heavily struggled in 2019 due to lagging sales, and the company might even drop their flagship G-series brand this year. The Korean OEM is also having a hard time to keep their existing phones up-to-date, as only a handful of LG flagships have received the Android 10 update so far. According to LG’s official update roadmap, the LG G8X ThinQ is next in line to get the taste of Android 10, while the LG G7 ThinQ, LG G8S ThinQ, and the LG V40 ThinQ will experience the same in Q3 2020. The company has now gone ahead and published kernel sources for Android 10 for the LG V40 ThinQ. LG V40 ThinQ XDA Forums At the time of reporting, we can only spot the kernel source code corresponding to the Korean variant of the LG V40 ThinQ (model number LMV409 ). The early arrival could be related to the fact that LG Korea is scheduled to deliver the stable version of Android 10 to the LG V40 ThinQ in the second quarter of 2020, way before the global rollout. The current packa

One UI 2.1 might not be headed to the Galaxy S9 and Note9 after all - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

Image
Earlier this month we found out that Samsung was apparently readying the update to One UI 2.1 for the Galaxy S9, S9+, and Note9. The information came from a company representative posting on the company's official Korean forum. Now though, a different post on the same forum by another representative strongly implies that at the time Samsung has no plans to bring One UI to its flagship models from 2018. Of course such plans might change in the future, but given how the company only focuses on security updates after two years pass from a phone's initial release, we wouldn't hold our collective breaths. One UI 2.1 is the latest iteration of Samsung's skin on top of Android. It made its debut on the S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra, then last week it also made it to the S10, S10+, and Note10. As the versioning implies, this is actually a minor update to One UI 2.0, which was delivered to all Samsung handsets that got the update to Android 10 - S9, S9+, and Note9 included. So wh

Galaxy A9 (2018) Android 10 update rolling out - SamMobile

Image
The Galaxy A9 (2018), Samsung’s first ever phone with four rear cameras, is now getting its second major Android OS update. Android 10 is rolling out to the A9 (2018), almost exactly an year after the phone was updated to Android Pie. The Android 10 update is available in Poland at this time and should soon be out in other markets. It comes with software version  A920FXXU3CTCD and the March 2020 security patch. Galaxy A9 (2018) Android 10 update is a go The full changelog is currently unknown, but you can expect all the major Android 10 features, such as Google’s navigation gestures, improved Digital Wellbeing, new parental controls, and more. One UI 2.0 also brings a slew of new functionality, in addition to making tons of improvements to the user interface, all of which we detailed in our One UI 2.0 vs One UI 1.x comparison a few months ago. As noted above, this is the second major Android update for the A9 (2018), and, as Samsung’s policy dictates, it’s also the last. The device w

Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) starts getting its One UI 2.0 update based on Android 10 - XDA Developers

Image
A quad-rear camera setup is not exclusive to the flagship segment anymore, as current-gen affordable mid-rangers like the Realme 6 series and the Redmi Note 9 (Pro) lineup carry it as well. Samsung actually kickstarted the trend of incorporating four individual rear camera sensors with the release of the Galaxy A9 back in 2018. In terms of software, the phone was launched with Samsung Experience 9.0 on top of Android 8.0 Oreo, though an update to Android 9 Pie was released for the device around a year ago. Cut to now, Samsung has started rolling out the Android 10 update to the Galaxy A9 (2018) with One UI 2.0. At the time of this article’s publication, the Android 10 firmware, tagged as A920FXXU3CTCD , is available in Poland for the global variant of the phone (model number SM-A920F ). The Korean OEM is practically ahead of their own schedule, as this particular device was scheduled to receive the Android 10 update in April. The arrival of the One UI 2.0 on the Galaxy A6 (2018) as w

WireGuard VPN makes it to 1.0.0—and into the next Linux kernel - Ars Technica

Image
Enlarge / WireGuard will be in tree for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (pictured), as well as the upcoming 5.6 kernel. reader comments 52 with 30 posters participating, including story author Share this story We've been anticipating WireGuard's inclusion into the mainline Linux kernel for quite some time—but as of Sunday afternoon, it's official. Linus Torvalds released the Linux 5.6 kernel, which includes (among other things) an in-tree WireGuard. Phoronix has a great short list of the most interesting new features in the 5.6 kernel, as well as a longer "everything list" for those who want to make sure they don't miss anything. If this is the first time you're hearing about WireGuard, the TL;DR is that it's a relatively new VPN (Virtual Private Network) application that offers a leaner codebase, easier configuration, faster connect times, and the latest and most thoroughly peer-reviewed and approved encryption algorithms. Samsung has yet to officially publish the April 2020 security patch details as of this writing, but some Galaxy smartphones have already received it, including the Galaxy S10 and Note 10. Now it’s the Galaxy S8 series’ turn (SM-G950F/SM-G955F), as a new firmware update is rolling out in numerous countries, and although this OTA release doesn’t push the phone’s Android OS version beyond Pie, it does include the April 2020 security patch. Samsung Galaxy A9 2018 Android 10 (One UI 2.0) update goes live - PiunikaWeb

Image
Samsung is already rolling out an improved One UI 2.1 update to the likes of Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S10. The One UI 2.1 skin comes pre-installed on the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Z Flip and will for sure trickle down to older and mid-range handsets. Until then, though, the likes of Samsung Galaxy A9 2018, which is not guaranteed an update to One UI 2.1, can only make do with the slightly older One UI 2.0 skin, but still based on the same Android 10 OS. So far, Samsung has already pushed the One UI 2.0 update to a bunch of midrange handsets such as Galaxy M40, M30, M30s, M20, A80, A70, A70s, A50, A50s, A40, A30, A7 2018 and even the Galaxy A6. Samsung Galaxy A6 (2018) As I write this, the Galaxy A9 2018 Android 10 update is now up for grabs. New updates are being added at the bottom of this story……. Original story (published on March 26, 2020) follows: Stories of the upcoming Samsung One UI 2.5 and One UI 2.1 updates have been doing rounds all over the web, leaving many owners of Samsung devices yet to receive the One UI 2.0 update wondering when their chance will come. Matter of fact, some are even surprised that One UI 2.1 update is already rolling out to the likes of Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S10 series, yet they’ve yet to get a taste of the now older One UI 2.0 skin. Of course, the One UI 2.1 skin will at some point make it to some of the devices that get updated to One UI 2.0 such as Galaxy Note 9 and S9, but there is no official roadmap yet. More so, nothing is concrete when it comes to the budget handsets like the Galaxy A50. Galaxy S10+ One UI 2.1 update Sure, the Galaxy A50 Android 10 update is already out there. This is the latest iteration of Samsung’s custom Android skin that first shipped with the Galaxy S20 lineup and the Galaxy Z Flip. How to activate the Android 10 hidden game - Softonic

Easter eggs are fun bits of codes that developers hide deep within their programs. Think of them as like an artist’s tag and you’ll get a clearer understanding of what they are. They’re there to show exactly who is behind the computer program you’re using. They show ownership and pride and all things in between. Advertisement The great thing with digital Easter eggs though, is that the possibilities are endless. Rather than simple signatures like you see on a work of art or visual tag like you’ll see on a piece of street art, computer program Easter eggs can be literally anything. What started as a few strands of errant code and hidden digital images buried deep in the bowels of computer games and programs have evolved into so much more. Easter eggs can now be games in themselves worth the effort and enjoyment of finding them for the experiences they offer in their own right. Google clearly knows this as the speeding dinosaur in Chrome will attest to. It’s not just Chrome thou
