Samsung Galaxy S9, S9+ Get January Update On Verizon - Android Headlines

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are receiving a new update on Verizon. The update brings the January 2021 Android security patch. It is rolling with software version G960USQS9FUA2 and G965USQS9FUA2 for the two 2018 Galaxy flagships respectively. The official changelog only mentions the latest security update and that's probably about it. So don't go digging for new features with this update.

That said, the January 2021 Android security patch does contain fixes for dozens of high-risk vulnerabilities as well as one critical vulnerability found in Android OS. Additionally, the latest security update also fixes nine moderate and high-risk Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE) items. SVEs are software flaws that only affect Samsung smartphones (One UI). So you might want to update your aging phone to the latest security version right away.

January security update is now rolling out for the Galaxy S9 series on Verizon

The Samsung Galaxy S9 line is about to reach its third anniversary. Launched with Android 8.0 Oreo back in February 2018, the Galaxy S9 devices have already received their second (and last) major Android OS update to Android 10.

Samsung did recently promised to offer its flagships as well as select mid-range smartphones in the Galaxy A series up to three years of Android OS updates. However, this upgraded software update policy only covers phones launched in 2019 and beyond. So, unfortunately, the Galaxy S9 series misses out on this.

The 2018 Galaxy S flagships continue to receive Android security updates though. They currently receive monthly security updates. But, as mentioned earlier, they are about to reach their third anniversary and we might soon see Samsung drop them to quarterly security updates schedule. The Korean company currently offers monthly security updates to its eligible phones for up to three years from launch.

Nonetheless, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are now picking up the January 2021 Android security update on Verizon. You can download the update over the air (OTA) by navigating to the Software update menu in your phone's Settings app and then hitting Download and install. You may also receive a notification prompting you to download the update.

If you're a Galaxy S9 user and are looking to upgrade to a newer phone, the recently launched Galaxy S21 series might be an ideal choice. Samsung is offering $350 in trade-in value for the Galaxy S9 series phones. It's a decent value for the three-year-old phones in 2021. The Galaxy S21 series starts at $799.99 for the vanilla S21. The prices go up to $1379.99 for the 512GB Galaxy S21 Ultra.
