Samsung's Galaxy Tab Active Pro rugged tablet gets new update - Android Headlines

Samsung's aging rugged Android tablet Galaxy Tab Active Pro is getting a new software update. The company is rolling out the November 2022 Android security patch to the 2019 model. The update is available for both Wi-Fi and LTE models of the device, at least in a few markets. A wider release should begin shortly.

As of this writing, the Galaxy Tab Active Pro Wi-Fi (model number SM-T540) is picking up the November SMR (Security Maintenance Release) in Europe. Well, the rollout has begun in Switzerland with firmware version T540XXS3CVL2 but should soon sweep through the continent before expanding into other regions. The same update for the LTE model (SM-T545) is available in the UK and Thailand with firmware version T545XXS3CVL2_B2BF. Samsung will soon cover units in more markets. Note that this tablet didn't arrive in the US.

The November SMR for Samsung's Galaxy smartphones and tablets patches about 60 vulnerabilities. These include both Galaxy-specific and generic Android OS fixes. Some of the fixes were labeled critical by the company, while a vast majority were labeled to be of high severity. As usual, these flaws exist on certain device components. So only devices using the compromised components are vulnerable to those security risks. With the latest update, the Galaxy Tab Active Pro is protected against all of those vulnerabilities.

The Galaxy Tab Active Pro may not get the December update

It's pertinent to mention here that Samsung has already released the December SMR. The latest release has reached dozens of Galaxy models over the past few weeks. However, the Galaxy Tab Active Pro may not get it. Released in October 2019, this tablet is more than three years old now and is only eligible for quarterly security updates. It will miss one or two security releases in between. Samsung last seeded the September patch to the device and is now jumping to the November SMR. The next update may come in February or March 2023. It will get those releases at least until September next year.

This aging Samsung tablet isn't eligible for Android 13 either. In fact, the Galaxy Tab Active Pro didn't even get Android 12. The mid-range device debuted with Android 9 Pie and received updates until Android 11. With security updates also stopping soon, it is now on its last legs. If you're holding onto this rugged Samsung tablet, you should consider upgrading to a newer model. The company recently launched the Galaxy Tab Active 4 Pro with a built-in S Pen.
